An artist from Laterza next to De Chirico
“Packing your bags and leaving”. The artist from Laterza Antonio Giannini, painter and designer, can afford this. He was born in 1980, famous for his works showing, for the most part, suitcases, luggage and life experiences as well as everyday objects. They are stacked in an orderly disorder to shape and volume to the remembrances, the past memories and future hopes.
“An artist’s bag metaphor of his memory”
LATERZA- in the summer the sunshine in the southern cities gives the objects a particular aspect. It makes them unreal, different, creates an alienating perception. People feel relaxed in the early afternoon and the objects obtain a particular shape. “ Metafisica al Sud - Enigma di un pomeriggio d’estate” is the title of the collateral exhibition organized on 10th July last year in the rooms of the Castle of Otranto next to the main exhibition by De Chirico “ De Chirico mistero e poesia” hosted in the fortress overlooking the sea.
“ In eleven paintings Giannini’s memories in his grandparents’ house”

In eight days the hall of Cavalerizza has seen a growing number of visitors and even some students have visited the exhibition.

[…] containers/trays/bags/books: working on the transgression of their duties on re-thinking their use by allowing them to take on a new meaning through the poetic narrative. Your work, I love that you can communicate with few elements, serial, minimal, piled up neatly to create volumetric correspondences, dynamics of composition.
Among the paintings and the shades of colors, sketches, the green of the pine trees facing the window and the warm notes of Domenico Modugno, in the studio of Antonio Giannini, a grandfather clock of dark wood distracts and introduces an ancient time, the homespun of artist.
Books, suitcases, phonographs, antique cars, couches, drawers with dreams and childhood games are recurrent subjects in the painting of Antonio Giannini, symbolically and ingeniously transfers on canvas with oil or with crayon nature of his existence, deeply and morbidly tied to a past that lives and satiates his present.
[…let’s begin again with a young man who has already made his name and who will certainly be discussed – Antonio Giannini, an artist from Laterza. He moves between metaphysics, surrealism and symbolism, immortalizing everyday objects and making the cardboard the main element of exceptional artistic creations.
I would dare to call him “the artist of the baggage and the journey” because the object and the idea are in his works together with mopeds, cars, airplanes…In this exhibition there is the reality of a great journey to undertake in his world and in his works after which you can certainly keep a satisfying feeling.
